This one is used a lot for Bonsai, as it has a small three-lobed leaf with the center one much longer than the two side lobes. Hence the name "Trident."

CARPINIFOLIUM (The Hornbeam Maple)

This is classed as a small tree or large shrub. It is a very hardy tree and will grow in most all types of soil. This is one of the few trees that has male and female trees, and both are required for making seeds. The leaf is long and is without lobes, with a good bright green color. It can get tall and takes the cold too.

CAUDATUM ssp UKURUNDUENSE

A hardy tree, adaptable to soil and moisture from very wet to quite dry. Native from Manchuria to Japan. This is one of the few that can take the cold down to –50 degrees. It has flowers on upright stems. A tree-like shrub similar to the American native maple A. Spicatum.
